So the weight has been creeping on for many months now and you’re sick of it. You just want to be back to how you used to be.

You go and see your doctor and ask for something to help you, hoping for a pill to make it all melt away. You get a script and you’re told to eat better and do some exercise and you’ll be fine.

Sounds perfect!!

But what are these pills anyway? There’s definitely no shortage of ‘new’, ‘fantastic’, ‘guaranteed to work’ pills on the market. But what do they actually do to you to help you lose weight? Let me explain…

There are only a couple of pharmaceutical options available but plenty of ‘natural’ products out there to bamboozle you. None of them will work without a proper diet and exercise.

  1. PHENTERMINE (Duromine, Metermine)

  • Reduces appetite
  • Makes you feel energised

  • Addictive – so only used short term (3 months)
  • Heart palpitations and increased blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Nausea, dry mouth
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Interacts with many other medications
  • Cannot be used if there are any underlying heart, thyroid or psychiatric problems

This is a drug that suppresses your appetite so you eat less, which means less calories in. Eating less seems like a reasonable way to lose weight but unless you’re eating the right kinds of food, the weight will come straight back after stopping the medication. I see this happen ALL the time.

  1. ORLISTAT (Xenical, Prolistat)

  • Reduces absorption of fat from food, which means less calories in.

  • Fatty diarrhoea and faecal leakage
  • Urgency going to the bathroom
  • Stomach cramps, nausea
  • Flatulence
  • Stops essential (good) fat being absorbed
  • Interacts with other medications
  • Problem if you have other health issues (ask your pharmacist if it is safe for you)

For many years we were lead to believe that fat in our food was the cause of weight problems. Sure, there are a lot of bad fats that we need to avoid but there are good fats that are absolutely essential to us. Our brain and other organs need these fats to function properly. Without them you can’t effectively lose weight and keep it off forever.

  1. LIRAGLUTIDE injection (Saxenda)

  • Suitable for obese people with a BMI >30
  • Suitable for those with weight related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, with a BMI >27

  • Daily injection
  • Only recommended for those with major weight issues and health problems
  • Side effects including nausea, stomach pain, bowel changes
  • Very Expensive
  • Must be monitored by a doctor

This product can only be used with diet and exercise program. I attended a seminar on this product and asked the question, “What happens when they stop using the injection?”. I was told the weight begins to creep up again.

There is no shortage of natural weight loss products that spruik their amazing results- Garcinia Cambogia, Green Tea Extract, Green Coffee Beans, Chitosan, Chromium, Fat Blaster, diet shakes, diet bars….. But do they actually work?

All of these products are designed to be used with diet and exercise programs. Whether or not they have been properly tested is questionable. Just because they have a before and after photo doesn’t prove anything. Does anyone actually check if they are true??

It’s better to look at the long-term goal of being healthy and not just losing weight. You can’t lose weight effectively without being healthy. They go hand-in-hand. We need to be realistic. When you make changes to improve your overall health your body will show its gratitude in many ways, including losing excess weight.

Don’t plan your diet to be followed for 3 months. Make changes that you can sustain for LIFE. Nothing replaces our need for good quality food, including lots of good fats and fruit and vegetables. The number of calories you eat is not important, it’s the QUALITY of the calories that matter.

I personally believe diet pills are NOT the answer, however, if spending money on these products makes you more likely to eat better and exercise, then go for it. But be very careful because many of these products come with a list of potential side effects.

Also, just use these things to help you get started. Don’t expect the product to do the job for you – it’s not going to happen!!

Long term weight loss, with or without the help of a pill, will not happen without proper food and exercise. The sooner you accept this the sooner you’ll get the results you want.

If you’ve been eating well and exercising without any results then you may have an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. I help people discover the reasons behind their inability to lose weight.
